ABOUT THE WORKSHOP:

Facilitated by Dagmar I. Glausnitzer-Smith and artist duo Zierle & Carter over five consecutive days, 'Pushing the inside out – Drawing the outside in’ is a experimental and experiential workshop in the Neuköln district of Berlin which offers a unique and an intense input-collaboration of three internationally established artists, where participants will experience an array of methodologies, processes and approaches to performance art, whilst being actively encouraged to delve into new and unchartered territory.

A Public Performance Programme of participants’ work will follow the workshop on Saturday June 20. There will be a breakfast feedback session on Sunday 21.

WHO IS THE WORKSHOP FOR?

For artists, students and practitioners from all creative backgrounds with a keen interest in performance art approaches/processes. Artists of all experience are welcome.

ABOUT DAGMAR L. GLAUSNITZER-SMITH:

Dagmar I. Glausnitzer-Smith graduated in London from the Royal College of Art in 2000 and from Goldsmiths' College in 1994. After her completion of a two year Picker Fellowship at Kingston University in 2003, she returned to Germany organising international T.a.T. (pure action in art in action) Performance Art Workshops and City site-specific 12-hour Marathon Performance Art Workshops called 'Werktag'. She has been organising public events with Live Performances and experimental exhibitions in the Art House ‘kunstwirkstoff’ in the countryside of Germany and developing the international exhibition as event -transitstation- which took place in London 2003, Berlin 2005, Edinburgh 2006 and Copenhagen in 2010. Transitstation Copenhagen has been a collaboration with the Royal Danish Academy of Art. Live Actions and exhibitions took place in the USA, Germany, UK, France, Scotland, Denmark, Austria, New Zealand, and Cyprus. She has been part of the Month of Performance Art, MPA-B Berlin since 2012 and presented Live Performances and Performance Art Workshops at 1st and 2nd Cyprus International Performance Art Festival 2013 and 2014, Live Performance Work – epitelesis Athens 2014 at Art Wall Gallery and Project Space.

Glausnitzer examines several aspects of collecting objects, the re-collection of past ideas and images, voice and autobiography by means of ‘Performance for the Camera’. The understanding of ‘self’ as portraiture is seen as a two-dimensional layer. Photographic images reflect a temporary trueness to the artist’s enquiry and inventive methods to re-position herself in the world of Life occurrences and 'witnesship'. 

ABOUT Alexandra ZIERLE & Paul CARTER:

Interdisciplinary, multi-sensory and always site and context responsive, Alexandra Zierle (DE) & Paul Carter’s (UK) practice spans performance and live art, socially engaged practice, video, sound, installation, and photography and their work has been widely exhibited internationally throughout Europe, Canada, United States, South America, Australia, in Asia and Africa. Through their collaborative practice, Zierle & Carter critically examine different modes of communication and what it means to be human, addressing notions of belonging, dynamics within relationships, and the transformation of limitations. Their work sites an embodied investigation into human interactions and encounters, acting as an invitation to venture into the spaces in-between the external and internal, permanent and transient, spoken and unheard. The work fundamentally explores society’s conventions, traditions, and rituals, often flipping them on their head, reversing orders, and disrupting the norm. The artists’ intimate relationship and subsequent dialogues with matter, in other words with the stuff we encounter on a daily basis, is key to all of their enquiries.

Twice recipients of Arts Council England grants, including support for a residency at the Banff Centre in Canada, Zierle & Carter’s performance for camera piece Encounter – The Arrival won the audience award at the Exeter Contemporary Open 2011 and their work is featured in ‘Personal Structures Time – Space – Existence’ from The Global Art Affairs Foundation, and in Manuel Vason’s new Double Exposures publication co-published by Intellect and LADA. Guest lecturers at a number of international performance art workshops, including IPA 2014 in Romania and PAStudies in Kaunas, Lithuania, in 2015 they will present work and lead workshops in numerous platforms, festivals, exhibitions and events in Athens, Berlin, Thessaloniki, London, Essen, Linz and Kaunas. They are currently In Between Time Associate Artists.
